Shanghai Tunnel Co is working with French contractor Bouygues on plans to build what is thought to be the largest diameter tunnel in Shanghai. The two firms are co-operating on plans to build a 15.2m dia TBM that will build a US$1.48bn, 9km long road tunnel under the Yangtze river from Wuhaogou in Shanghai’s Pudong district to Chongming island. Construction of the Chongming tunnel, consisting of two parallel bores containing a three-lane highway in each direction, will start early next year. Completion is due in five years.
