China’s highest decision-making body, the State Council, has approved plans for the construction of a 8.5km long tunnel as part of a US$1.5bn, 25km long road project in Shanghai. The scheme, including a 9.5km long bridge will link Shanghai’s Pudong district with Chongming and is being planned by Shanghai municipality. The tunnel will be built under the Nangang river, a subsidiary of the Yangtze river. Feasibility studies are underway and the Shanghai authorities are seeking private finance to develop the project.
