Although the contents of this volume covers general geotechnical engineering topics there is a chapter of particular interest to tunnelling engineers on ‘Bored tunnels in soft soil’. This is especially topical in that it describes the problems of bored tunnels in the Netherlands, modes of failure for a tunnel lining, structural analysis of the tunnel linng, and the field study work on the second Heinenoord tunnel. Other chapters cover design methodology, development of models for structural analysis, soil mechanics and groundwater flow, block revetments and flexible retaining walls.
