The construction of the Anzob tunnel in northern Tajikistan had fresh life breathed into it last month, when Iranian contractor, the Sorbir company, was awarded a US$40M contract for its completion.

The government has declared that the tunnel is strategically important, as it will provide an important trade link between Central Asia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Iran has already promised funds of US$5M.

Situated at 3,372m asl, the 5km long road tunnel will be one of the world’s highest. Construction originally started in Soviet times, but stopped during the Tajikistani civil war (1992-1997).

The Sorbir company hopes to finish the tunnel in 20 months.
