About 10 companies are set to compete for a concession to develop the US$1bn Orlovsky road tunnel in St Petersburg, which is being planned by Russia’s Federal Road Agency with St Petersburg City Council.
Plans call for the construction of a 1.7km long, 12.4m wide tunnel under the River Neva in what will be one of St Petersburg’s largest infrastructure projects. The tunnel, which will run from Piskarevsky Avenue to Smolnaya embankment, is due to be completed by 2011.
A project roadshow was due to be held in Frankfurt, Germany, this month. Firms then have until 6 December to submit preliminary proposals expressing interest in the 25-year concession.
After six months of assessments, the winning concessionaire is expected to be named on 9 June 2008, said Maxim Sokolov, the head of the city committee for investments and strategic projects. British law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer advised on the preliminary stages of the project.
