Planning approval was granted for the stretch between Westmead and the Sydney CBD, as well as for the tunnelling and station excavation between Westmead and The Bays. Due to the project’s size, planning approvals are being phased.

Sydney Metro also received a separate planning approval for two planned precast facilities at Eastern Creek, which will support the project. The two new factories at Eastern Creek will support 240 local jobs and manufacture 148,000 precast concrete segments for the 24km twin tunnels that stretch from Westmead to the Sydney CBD.

Sydney Metro West will have a target travel time of around 20 minutes between Parramatta and Sydney CBD. It will link new suburbs to rail for the first time, with stations confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and the Sydney CBD.

Future planning phases will cover major civil construction works, including station excavation and tunnelling between The Bays to Sydney CBD, as well as tunnel fit-out, station building and operation of the line between Westmead and the CBD.

Construction on Sydney Metro West began in late 2020; the first of three tunnelling contracts is expected to be awarded in mid-2021.
