The competition – to be held at TBC’s headquarters in Bastrop, Texas early next year – will challenge teams over eight days to come up with tunneling solutions and address the challenge of Can you beat the snail?. Teams from around the world will compete to design, build, and race their own tunneling machines.

The teams will compete in three categories:

  1. Fastest to complete the tunnel (overall winner)
  2. Innovative design, build, and/or test (Innovation Award)
  3. Most accurate tunnel (Accuracy Award)

TBC encourages teams to design, build, and test all systems in-house (within reason); minimize dependency on heavy machinery during competition week (small excavators and forklifts can be provided, no cranes will be provided); and simplify launch set-ups.

The overall winner of this year’s competition was TUM Boring from Technical University of Munich for its 11.8m (38.7ft) tunnel. TUM also won the inaugural competition in 2021.

This year’s Innovation Award went to Swissloop Tunneling, and the Accuracy and Navigation Award to CU Hyperloop.

Registration for next year’s competition closes on May 21. For more information and to register, go to www.boringcompany.com/competition
