The Tram Ticino consortium has secured the planning contract for the Breganzona tunnel in Switzerland.
The consortium, comprising Afry, Pini and Lombardi, was awarded the contract by Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese SA.
The Tram-Treno network in Lugano will connect the city centre with the Malcantone and Vedeggio valleys, reducing travel time and providing sustainable transport. The redesign of the network is expected to increase capacity from 7,500 passengers per day today to 20,000. It is due to open in 2035.
The underground station Lugano – Railway Station SBB, situated 40m below the new underpass, will serve as an intermodal hub for trams, trains, the railway network and city buses, connecting the new network with regional and national transport.
“We are pleased to be able to use our expertise to bring this complex inner-city project from the planning stage to life, thus contributing to a sustainable transport solution,” said Marcel Winter, country manager of Afry in Switzerland.
