A tunnel construction site in India was hit by heavy rains last month killing between 40 and 200 people.

The actual death toll has been difficult to calculate, because it was not known how many of the workers and their families were camping on the site at the time.

The victims were working on the Parbati Hydroelectric Project in Himachel Pradesh state. Many of the workers were asleep when the floods hit, following heavy rainfall.

Rescuers based in the nearby town of Kullu also fear that many tourists could be caught up in the disaster because the region is a popular holiday destination.

The US$8.16bn project, that includes 45km of tunnels (see T&TI, October 2002, p6 for details) will face setbacks after damage to the headrace tunnel has been reported.
