In the wake of recent highly publicised tunnel disasters, Swiss engineering consultancies Ernst Basler + Partners; Bonnard & Gardel Consulting Engineers; and Electrowatt Engineering have formed a consortium that will provide both existing and new clients throughout the world with a complete service for safety in tunnels. A wide range of safety topics is addressed, including: risk analysis; evaluation of safety measures from prevention to intervention; simulation of fire and smoke spreading as a basis for design of emergency ventilation systems; and conceptual and detailed planning and design of safe tunnel ventilation systems suitable for both normal operation and for an emergency.
