NCC International Projects won the contract to build a 3.6km double track rail tunnel between Öxnered and Trollhättan in western Sweden last month, allowing the company to reopen its tunnelling department.

“We’re pleased to have been commissioned for this project, as it will enable us to re-hire a number of employees from the tunnelling unit, which we were previously compelled to close down,” said Per Nielsen, president of NCC International Projects.

Banverket, the Swedish Railway Administration, awarded the US$38M contract, which also includes the construction of two parallel evacuation tunnels with separate exits that will have a combined length of 2km.

Work should begin early this month and construction should run for two and a half years.
