Some 13 tunnel workers were rescued by military personnel and local villagers on 8 August after being trapped by heavy mudslides triggered by torrential rains in Arunachal Pradesh state, eastern India.
The men were working for leading Indian contractor, Larsen & Toubro. The firm is building tunnels as part of a 2,000 MW hydroelectric project for the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation at Dulanmukh, 150km from the state capital, Itanagar. H. Sonowal, the power corporation chief medical officer, said: “Some were in a state of shock and unable to talk.” He said they were suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.
