Following July’s announcement, (T&TI, July, p10), that Canadian TBM manufacturer Lovat had won a deal to supply two 3.3m diameter EPB machines for a sewer extension in the municipality of York, north of Toronto, comes the news that the twins are to become triplets with the supply of a third Lovat machine to the same project and contractor JV.

The McNally Construction – Aecon Group JV has engaged Lovat to supply a third 3.3m EPB machine that is identical to the two previously ordered machines. It will be used to bore a 4.2km long tunnel lined by reinforced concrete segments through geology typified as medium sands and glacial tills, including many cobbles and boulders. To be driven with 18m of cover to the tunnel crown, the tunnel alignment is completely below the local water table.

Lovat said the TBM would be delivered to site in March next year.
