A U-shaped TBM, developed by CRIG, CREG and CRSIG, has been launched in Yuen Long South, Hong Kong.

TBM Zijing, which is 9.36m wide and 20.72m high, will help to build flood control measures for the Northern Metropolis new towns development.

The TBM integrates shield tunnelling and pipe-jacking technologies and simultaneously excavates, supports, transports, and backfills. CREG says this approach improves construction speed while minimising environmental impact compared with traditional open-cut methods.

This project has a total length of 1km with a finished 6.15m wide and 6.35m high box culvert cross-section. The geology consists of sandy and silty clay with abundant groundwater, and some sections contain a large amount of silt.
