A shortlist of three consortia are currently undertaking a feasibility study for UK company Wessex Water for the future construction of a sewage relief scheme in Bath. The scheme, budgeted for $28M, could involve a substantial tunnelling section.

The three consortia, Miller/Brown & Root; Amec/Halcrow; Costain/Haswell, have been commissioned to study a possible tunnel scheme, a possible storm tank system and also to provide a separate innovative solution if identified. Bids will be returned to Wessex Water in April 2001.

The aim of the scheme is to reduce sewage related debris and minimise the volume of untreated sewage overflowing after heavy rainfall into the River Avon. It will also provide Bath with an environmentally sustainable sewerage system.

Currently a site investigation study is underway to gain further information on local hydrogeology and underlying strata. The scheme must not compromise the integrity of the famous Bath Springs.

The project is supported by UK water regulator Ofwat, the Environment Agency and the government and is scheduled for commissioning by March 2005.
