The design and build contract involves the construction of a 9.5km main water collection tunnel at a diameter of 4.5m, as well as the installation of 21 access shafts. The excavation of the tunnel will be executed with the use of two TBMs and is expected to be completed in four years.
The company is also currently involved in the construction of 25km of the Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Program (STEP) Project in the UAE. The total length of the STEP deep sewer tunnel is 41km; a total of eight TBMs will excavate the entire tunnel. In May 2012 Impregilo achieved breakthrough when the third TBM completed its drive, marking its accomplishment of contract T-02, a 15km central section of the sewer.
