Plans have been put forward for two 700m long road tunnels costing up to US$70M to relieve congestion in the Whitehorse district of eastern Melbourne, Australia. But VicRoads has indicated the tunnels, under two busy intersections, would only be considered after the Mitcham-Frankston tollway is opened in 2008. A spokeswoman said, “The government believes the freeway will have a positive impact in reducing large traffic volumes…we will await the completion of that construction.”
