Witt India, a tunnel ventilation system manufacturer, has teamed up with electrification and automation company ABB India to strengthen safety and efficiency in India’s road tunnels.
The latest partnership, which further advances the deal signed in June 2024, will use new advanced tunnel ventilation technology to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
It will help install advanced smoke extraction motors in key projects across India, allowing commuters to travel through tunnels with more confidence and security.
The tunnel ventilation systems are crucial for safe, breathable environments, especially during fires, said ABB. These ventilation systems manage airflow, control smoke, regulate temperature, and reduce pollutant spread.
ABB said its motors are being integrated with Witt India’s Banana Jet Fans to meet India’s growing infrastructure needs. These motors are built to operate under extreme conditions, ensuring reliable performance in both normal and emergencies.
Witt India is an Indo-German joint venture company of Reitz United Technologies, India and Witt & Sohn, Hamburg, Germany.
Its motors are designed to endure high temperatures, up to 300°C for two hours, ensuring effective smoke extraction during fires and clear evacuation routes.
When paired with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), they also reduce energy consumption during normal operations, offering both reliability and energy efficiency, the electrification and automation firm said.
ABB and Witt India have significantly contributed to major infrastructure projects, including the Rewa-Sidhi Tunnel in Madhya Pradesh and the Kuthiran Tunnel in Kerala.
Witt India managing director Vinod Jalagam said: “The future of tunnel ventilation technology is likely to see advancements in automation, energy efficiency, and integration with smart infrastructure.
“Innovations such as real-time monitoring and adaptive ventilation systems are expected to enhance safety and efficiency.”
ABB’s motors, deployed in key tunnel projects across the country, are said to enhance safety while being energy-efficient and operationally reliable in tunnel ventilation systems.
Additionally, by integrating ABB’s motors, Witt India helps reduce operational and capital costs for tunnel operators while providing advanced solutions that align with India’s infrastructure goals.
