Swiss engineering firm Electrowatt Infra, in joint venture with Basler & Hofmann, has won a contract to design a 5km long railway tunnel and underground station beneath the existing station in Zurich.

The deal has been placed by Swiss Federal Railways and Zurich municipal government. Electrowatt Infra will be responsible for design approval, detailed design and project management.

The project, part of a new US$1bn centre line for the Zurich underground due for completion in 2012, includes the double-track rail tunnel, the four-track station, four escape and rescue galleries and a 22m diameter shaft. Geology is sedimentary rock and molasse.
